Proving that heroism knows no age, 15-year-old Chris Lorenz Fabian was posthumously honored by the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG), together with the National Youth Commission (NYC), with the Youth Heroism Award for his extraordinary courage during the tragic shooting incident at San Jose National High School in Tacloban City.

DILG Secretary Jonvic Remulla, represented by DILG Region 8 Director Arnel Agabe, conferred the special citation in honor of Fabian, who sacrificed his life to save at least 30 fellow students after blocking an entryway and placing himself in the line of fire to prevent the armed student-attackers from entering their classroom.

In a message read by Agabe, Remulla said the Award recognizes Fabian’s bravery and serves as a lasting tribute to a young Filipino whose selfless and courageous act spared dozens of lives from further tragedy.

He said the grief felt by Tacloban City and the nation over the untimely passing of Fabian and the other victims of the school shooting must also strengthen the resolve of government and communities to improve policies and measures that protect children in schools.

“Through our Safer School Zones and Safe Cities initiatives, the DILG commits to continue working earnestly alongside our local leaders, police forces, and educators to protect our children, strengthen security, and ensure every school gate across our region remains a barrier against harm,” Remulla said.

To help ensure that no other family endures the same heartbreak, Remulla said the DILG is actively overseeing LGUs in institutionalizing strict campus safety protocols, enhancing police visibility around academic zones, and empowering communities to recognize and intercept threats early.

Fabian’s family, including his parents Christopher and Erbea and his grandfather Rodrigo, attended the commemoration program prepared by DILG Region 8.

“Hindi namin alam kung paano magsimula kung wala siya, pero sa nagawa niya po, hindi na po niya naisip ang sarili niya, mas inuna niya po ang kapakanan ng iba, kaya nandidito po kami para magpasalamat po sa pagkilala ninyo sa kanya,” Fabian’s mother said.

The DILG also urged the City Government of Tacloban and other local stakeholders to commemorate Fabian as a local youth hero whose legacy will continue to inspire future generations and serve as a reminder of the collective responsibility to keep schools safe.

The recognition also reflects the government’s commitment to President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s directive to ensure that schools remain safe spaces where students can learn without fear.
