DILG to LCEs: Prohibit entry into 4-kilometer danger zone of Bulusan Volcano
Following the phreatic eruption of Bulusan Volcano, the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) has instructed concerned local chief executives (LCEs) to strictly prohibit entry into the 4-kilometer Permanent Danger Zone and maintain heightened vigilance in the extended danger zone on the southeast sector.
This directive is based on the recommendation of the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) due to the risk of pyroclastic density currents, ballistic projectiles, rockfall, avalanches, and ashfall in the area.
Through an Advisory, the DILG called on LCEs to enforce Operation L!sto protocols for volcanic eruptions and coordinate closely with their respective Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Councils (RDRRMCs).
Communities are reminded to take precautions such as wearing face masks or using damp cloths to prevent ash inhalation. Residents in low-lying areas, particularly along river channels, should stay alert for possible sediment-laden streamflows or lahars during prolonged or heavy rains.
The Department also advised aviation authorities to warn pilots against flying near the volcano’s summit.
According to regional reports, over 29,000 individuals in 25 barangays across Sorsogon have been affected and are being assisted by local government units. In particular, 1,132 families from Buraburan, Guruyan, Calmayon, Catanusan, and Puting Sapa are experiencing limited access to safe drinking water. Meanwhile, agricultural damage in Juban town is pegged at P675,000, affecting 45 farmers.
PHIVOLCS has raised Bulusan Volcano’s alert status from Level 0 to Level 1 (low-level unrest) following the eruption on April 28, 2025.
