LCEs urged to enforce pre-emptive forced evacuation protocols in preparation for ‘Pepito’
November 16, 2024
In anticipation of Tropical Cyclone Pepito, the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Friday urged concerned local government units (LGUs) to strictly enforce pre-emptive and forced evacuation protocols in areas identified as high risk for flooding, landslides, storm surges, and other related hazards.
In a memorandum to Luzon and Visayas LGUs, DILG Secretary Jonvic Remulla directed the Philippine National Police and the Bureau of Fire Protection to fully support the local chief executives in the enforcement of forced evacuation efforts.
He said LGUs must identify and prepare evacuation centers that meet safety standards and are equipped with sanitation and medical facilities as well as designated areas for vulnerable groups.
“All LGUs are reminded to prioritize the safety of children, the elderly, expectant mothers and persons with disabilities,” he said.
He said the intense rainfall expected from Pepito may elevate water levels in major dams, potentially requiring water discharge operations that could affect downstream communities.
LGUs were also urged to prepare for the distribution of relief supplies in coordination with the Department of Social Welfare and Development and their respective Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council.
According to PAGASA, Pepito could reach Super Typhoon category prior to making landfall this weekend and may bring heavy rainfall along with moderate to high risk storm surges in several areas of the country.
