Remulla Authorized by Palace to Announce Work, Class Suspensions During Disasters

Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretary Jonvic Remulla has been authorized by Malacañang to declare work and class suspensions during inclement weather and disasters, based on recommendations from the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC).

Presidential Communications Office Secretary Dave Gomez confirmed the directive, stating that Secretary Remulla has been “authorized to make announcements on behalf of the Cabinet and the Palace” in times of national emergencies.

As NDRRMC Vice Chairperson for Disaster Preparedness, Remulla assured the public that announcements will be made at least a night before—consistent with his practice during his time as Cavite governor.

On July 21, Remulla, through the official DILG Facebook page, declared the suspension of classes in all levels and work in government offices in several areas across the country for July 22, due to heavy rains brought by the Southwest Monsoon. The announcement was made based on recommendations from the Office of Civil Defense and other Cabinet officials. He also cautioned the public about potential landslides and continuous rains expected to persist until Thursday.

The DILG clarified that while the authority to declare suspensions has been given to the Secretary, the Department of Education and local government units may still issue their own suspension declarations based on conditions in their areas.

In Laguna, Governor Sol Aragones declared a province-wide class suspension in all public and private schools following an Orange Rainfall advisory from PAGASA—even though the province was not part of the initial list announced by Remulla.

The DILG urges the public to stay alert, follow official advisories, and prioritize safety during weather disturbances.
