Remulla: No special treatment for Romualdez, BJMP strictly following court, medical directives

Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretary Jonvic Remulla on Tuesday said the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) is strictly implementing the Sandiganbayan’s commitment order and medical recommendations for former House Speaker Martin Romualdez, stressing that no special treatment is being extended to him.

Speaking at a press conference in Camp Crame, Quezon City, Remulla said Romualdez’s placement at the infirmary of the New Quezon City Jail Male Dormitory in Payatas is based on his continuing medical needs following his evaluation by doctors from the Philippine General Hospital (PGH).

“Kung akala ninyo over and above yung treatment sa pinaglagyan niyan, tingnan niyo yung commitment orders at recommendation ng PGH (Philippine General Hospital),” Remulla said.

“Ayun lang ang sinusunod namin. Nothing more and nothing less,” he emphasized.

The Sandiganbayan Third Division ordered Romualdez’s transfer to the Quezon City Jail after PGH doctors found him clinically stable and no longer requiring continued confinement in an acute care hospital, while recommending continued medical care and monitoring.

“Ang recommendations ng PGH doctors: He is fit to be confined but has to be under medical supervision,” Remulla said.

Romualdez is currently housed at the jail infirmary with three other persons deprived of liberty (PDLs) requiring medical monitoring.

Remulla said the approximately 50-square-meter infirmary is not air-conditioned and is equipped with hospital beds, exhaust fans, and a common bathroom.

BJMP medical personnel will monitor Romualdez’s condition in accordance with the prescribed medical requirements. His personal doctors may also visit him during authorized visitation hours.

The BJMP said Romualdez underwent the same standard booking procedures required of PDLs upon his arrival at the Quezon City Jail, including medical evaluation, fingerprinting, mugshot taking, interview, and orientation.

The DILG said the BJMP will continue to implement the Sandiganbayan’s directives and applicable jail regulations while ensuring that Romualdez receives the medical attention required during his detention.
